What does magnetic susceptibility tensor mean?

Can someone please explain the meaning of Magnetic Susceptibility Tensor in simple English? I'm trying to understand the principles of pseudocontact shifts in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance but I don't even know what the chi tensors (axial and rhombic) mean and what they stand for.
