  Integrating ArXiv trackbacking feature

Like MO, I suggest integrating arXiv-trackbacking into the site.

how exactly does that work ?

@Suresh: The arxiv picks up blog trakbacks. It appears on the abstract page if and only if the paper has been mentioned (see http://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/9701001 as an example).

@Joe: the arXiv does not pick up *all* trackbacks. There have been some very rancourous blog posts about this in the past.

@José: Yes, I know. It picks up my old blog but not my new one. But I think if the quality of this site is maintained, there is a good chance they'd start picking up the trackbacks.

@Suresh: ArXiv uses a "semi-automated *editorial* process" for approving trackback enabling for external sites. As far I know, if the site is well-respected and / or known by some of the Admins there, it is more likely to get trackbacking-feature approved. ... So basically, it all depends on the quality of the site in question.

Physics.SE generates the occasional link to arXiv as well, so perhaps it could be a joint request...

I think it'd be a really good idea to have a simultaneous solution to this question, and the one on [citing with arXiv/DOI](http://meta.theoreticalphysics.stackexchange.com/q/33/569). By integrating these two things, we'd standardise the format for citations and dramatically simplify the code needed to recognise arXiv links to do the trackbacks.

The relevant meta MO thread for trackbacks is this: http://meta.mathoverflow.net/discussion/278/trackbacks-to-arxiv/

It would seem that it requires liaising with the arXiv people, since trackbacks are not allowed from just anywhere.

I would suggest this is not something we should try until we have at least passed the 90-day mark.

@JoeFitzsimons: Actually I thing it is worth to try it as soon as possible. I really doubt that on 90 day mark we will become a non-beta. And trackback might even change if we will survive as SE or won't. Moreover, as the links are to specific questions, I believe there is nor problem in having SE 'not large enough'.

@PiotrMigdal: Yes, I agree. The site is maturing and we haven't degenerated into widespread crackpottery, so it is probably a good time to revisit the idea.

I negotiated with the arXiv staff while we were setting this up for MathOverflow. I think it is fairly likely that they will be happy to receive trackbacks from this site, too. I am happy to help out (e.g. by emailing arXiv staff or the scientific committee) if the StackExchange staff decide to implement this feature.

I would strongly encourage implementing this, as I think it has been very useful for both MathOverflow and the arxiv, and this site's ties with the arXiv should be even stronger.

On MathOverflow, we found that it was necessary to write very complicated regexs to catch all the links. There are very many valid URLs for arXiv papers, and a trackback reporting mechanism needs to canonicalize these. We also catch links to front.math.ucdavis.edu, and report these as trackbacks to the main arXiv site, but maybe this isn't necessary here.

We have essentially no access to the back end, so it would need to go through the SE team.

@Joe, actually, our implementation on MathOverflow doesn't rely on the backend *at all*. We just wrote a little script that scrapes the front page once an hour, and another script that goes through a database dump once a month. In fact, we could very likely just tell our script to run on theoreticalphysics too, if everyone were agreeable.

@ScottMorrison, I think it is time to introduce arXiv trackbacks here. Your help would be highly appreciated. If it just the matter of telling your script to collect links here, we would be grateful. Let us know if it is going to work.
