Is the ground state of the Kitaev model approximately a singlet?

The model is described in

https://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/0506438

which breaks the SU(2) spin rotation symmetry explicitly.

Numerical calculations for 24 sites(\(J_{x}=J_{y}=J_{z}\) for three kinds of links)

https://arxiv.org/abs/1004.2964v2

indicates that the ground state is approximately a singlet for 24 sites.

Question: Is this result guaranteed by any mechanism or just accidental?
