  MUSIC algorithm: Number of tones

Hello everyone, 
I am currently investigating MUSIC and I know the algorithm relies on the  prior knowledge of the number of independent sources but I do not understand how to choose it.. Is there any rule of thumb or theory about it?

You can try different values and use BIC to decide on a good one.
