SE Community Promotion Ads - 2016

+ 2 like - 0 dislike

Update: Please vote here to support the 2016 ad for PhysicsOverflow on SE Physics, and here for supporting it on SE Academia.

Original Post:

As last year, SE Physics started a thread for this year's community ads. As our  previous PO ad is a bit outdated, I am looking for an improved version. At least two changes are needed:

  • forums $\to$ forum
  • (under construction) $\to$ [delete]

Please post here other suggestions for improvement, corrected and/or improved designs.

Image requirements
The image that you create must be 300 x 250 pixels, or double that if retina.
Must be hosted through our standard image uploader (imgur)
Must be GIF or PNG
No animated GIFs
Absolute limit on file size of 40 KB
If the background of the image is white or partially white, there must be a 1px border surrounding it.

Once a new design has been agreed on, I'll post it there and will ask you (here) to vote for it (there). To be displayed one needs a net vote count of (currently) +6.

Last years ad had a net vote count of 11 (+37-26), indicating both very strong support and strong opposition. (For comparison, among all other ads, none had more than 37 upvotes! The only other one with 37 upvotes was arXiv, with breakdown +37-0.)

Anticipating potential strong opposition again we'll need the support of all of you who have an account on SE to vote for the ad.

Note that, as the post on the SE site now emphasizes, the size requirements for adverts have changed. Thus someone will have to recreate the new version according to the specifications mentioned above. I cannot do it.

I edited it to make the top look a little nicer, too. The previous "Computer Modern" font that is present in the logo wasn't a great font for the ad. I also removed "frank" from the descriptor, because I felt it sounded like enforced frankness (that is a positive right) which we do not practise, rather than allowed-to-be-frank-ness (that is internally a negative right).

Nice, thanks Dimension10 !

Maybe we (Arnold?) could also post it on Academia ...?

Thanks! I submitted the ad; Voting can now be done on http://meta.physics.stackexchange.com/a/7448/7924

Thanks @Arnold Neumaier

Does anybody know why most of the other pictures look so much bigger than our PO ad on the SE thread? @Dimension10 I mean, is there something wrong with the size of our picture ...?

maybe there is something wrong with some of the other ads (taken from earlier years) ?

@Dilaton Those are the "retina" ads, which I think are supposed to be higher-resolution. The sizing requirements say 300\times250 for standard ads and 600\times500 for retina ads. The effect is only discernible on higher-resolution monitors anyway.

Ok, I have posted a community promotion ad on Academia here ...

@Arnold I've updated the ad a little to take into account Emilio Pisanty's criticism on PSE. I hope you don't mind me editing your ad there.

@Dimension10 thanks.

I have exchanged the figures on Academia too ...

@dimension10: Thanks. Indeed, it is easier to read now.

@dimension10: I think that you'd comment there that you changed it according to his remark!
