The formulas in the quote in http://www.physicsoverflow.org/37048 do not parse correctly. Trying to add dollar signs at the rightr places makes things worse, and puts the editor (in formula display mode) into an infinite loop.
The latex text was between emphasize tags and not within a latex tag or between dollar signs, and looked for instance like this:
For massive<em> \phi</em>^4 one ...
It seems that mathjax is not able to parse latex code between these tags. I have edited and corrected your comment
