How does the functional Bethe Ansatz work?

This question is a bit general and less specific. I've understood the algebraic Bethe Ansatz so far, but since we have a completeness problem Sklyanin suggested a different method, the so called functional Bethe Ansatz using a seperation of variables method. Can someone explain me the basic steps of this method and especially how does this method generally work and why?

P.S. if this sort of questions does not comply with the guidelines feel free to remove it.
